Rising Sun Energy Center (RSEC), a 501(c)3
not-for-profit organization, was founded in Santa Cruz, California in
1994. The primary objective of RSEC was to provide a demonstration
site and education center for renewable energy and conservation
techniques.
In 2000, RSEC moved to Berkeley, California and
expanded its objectives to include both education and direct
services. Our programs now include:
Why Energy?
We believe that the effects of our nation’s energy
and water use threaten our well-being. Social, environmental
and economic instability are all exacerbated by our nation’s
consumption of 40% of the world’s oil production. So long
as the price of energy and water is only reflected in our utility
bill, our society seems to be complacent. But increasingly,
we as a society are recognizing the connection between our non-sustainable
consumption of resources and the real price we pay: wars with
foreign countries, global warming, health issues, etc...
We at Rising Sun Energy Center are committed to
building a world where we improve the quality of life for all
of the world’s people without increasing the use of our natural
resources beyond the earth’s carrying capacity.
Accomplishments
Over the past five years RSEC has:
-
provided energy and water conservation audits and
hardware installation to over 6,500 residences in the East Bay area
-
trained over 200 high school and college students
as Energy Specialists who work in their community to weatherize
homes and help people conserve energy.
-
served over 2,000 homes between 2004-2005 alone
through our CYES program, attaining a cumulative savings of 538,133
annual kWh and 22,959 annual therms.
-
partnered with Advanced
Home Energy Services, a local contractor, to provide
attic insulation at 33% off to Bay Area homeowners.
At current costs, participating residents save
$102,457 from cumulative CYES measures per year, while 475 tons of
carbon dioxide emissions are prevented annually.
What’s Next
A rapidly growing demand for our services is a
testimony to the importance and timeliness of our mission. Here are a
few of the highlights:
-
Over
the next three years, the CYES program will serve over 10,000
residences across five counties in the greater Bay Area.
-
Our Energy Partners Program service area
has expanded to now include North Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville
and Richmond.
